Mad TV vs. SNL

I've always liked SNL. I love Jimmy Fallon and Tina Fey. In the past Norm and Dennis and Chevy and Bill and Will and Dan and Dana and Billy and Chris and Phi... to name a few.

And what SNL does now is put famous people we may or may not like and put them in funny positions in a sketch. For instance tonight, the made the evil villianous Simon of American Idol fame get up and sing and shake marachas. They made Janet Jackson diss herself. A few weeks ago Ben Affleck made fun of Gigli and the whole "Bennifer" ridiculousness.

But apart from that and Weekend update with Tina and Jimmy and those few few moments with Famous people Snl just isn't funny.

Any more.

That's sad... I want to trust my Saturdays will be spent laughing. (Those few I have off.)

And then came MAD TV. Which started slow. It kinda started as bad as SNL is now. But something happened. It became funny. I laughed at four sketches tonight that had no... count them... no famous people in them. (Except for Vanessa Williams but I'm not sure that counts.)

I think SNL's biggest problem (besides taking less chances) it relies too much on it's "stars." Horatio and Jimmy especially. Too much. Let some lesser guys come up with funny stuff. And Darrell Hammond has had nothing to do since Bill Clinton left office. I always thought he was funny.

It seems like they're coasting through... "We're SNL. People will watch us."

SNL. I'm not putting you down... I'm still taping the show. I know what you do is hard. I've spent three years writing a screenplay. I'm not saying you're not trying... but maybe not hard enough. Get back to the roots... and it's hard after 30 years I know... but find the strange. Find your Coneheads... find your Wayne and Garth and watch Mad Tv because it's on your ass.

That's just my opinion... but I've always known funny.
